Medscripta: the library as physical and virtual space for narrative medicine, creative writing, lectures, promoting the patients' nutritional wellness and health - Medscripta: la biblioteca come spazio fisico e virtuale di medicina narrativa, scrittura creativa, letture ad alta voce per il benessere alimentare e la salute del paziente.

Abstract. MedScripta Project has the aim to improve the communication between Doctors and patients. In this way we have the opportunity to bring about a convenient knowledge and information transfer about medical care and therapy in behalf of patients (family, consumers), through the written and spoken language (Narrative Medicine, Lectures, and Storytelling).
Project main topics are: food, food safety, lifestyle and precautions for wellness related to alimentation. It is well known that food and lifestyle as well, can play a key role in the pathogenesis of diseases. They represents significant primary health care and prevention tools to maintain good physical and psychological conditions of health. The project is based on methods already experienced in the past by:
- The Institute "Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Umbria e delle Marche (Italy)" Library in the: Computer Supported Collaborative Writing (heterogeneous group of work), Creative Writing, Electronic Publishing aimed at achieve a wide diffusion of information on food, Storytelling initiative, lectures of food preparation and food quality.
- The "Regina Elena - Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care" Library, (specialized in oncology), in which a "Patient Library" was developed, offering scientific information to patients and their families in a national health network, thank to an easy but authoritative paperback guide for citizens.
- The "Paediatric Bambino Gesù - Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care" Library, in collaboration with the Unit of Rare Disease of the Hospital with a Web page - forum for interaction with patients.
In the Project a collection of texts and multimedia documents will be organised (stories, narrations, interviews, description of foods, therapies), thank to the interaction with: patients, people in the family, people working in the health system. Librarians have a key role as support, providing to researchers: scientific and popular medical literature, verifying the readability of the knowledge so produced, developing also initiatives and shows based on lectures. The Librarians may take care of the collection of the published texts in narrative form. Specifically the activity performed in the project will permit:
(a) Start a Computer Supported Collaborative group able to publish texts on scientific medical culture, on food and nourishment, readable by patients itself and by citizens.
Under this point of view Librarian and the Library (with its physical and virtual spaces), will represents a "social interaction junction" of great value in order to communicate knowledge on health.
(b) Allow that patients' experiences, will be transmitted becoming an heritage for the civil society, but also an insight for medical and health professionals;
An interesting activity of MedScripta is represented by the alternative use of the Library Space for training and experience sharing amongst patients.
(c) Start an e-print archive follow the Open Access philosophy for diffusion of multimedia texts and documents (personal experience about food wellness, lifestyle, therapeutic diets, fastings)

Med Scripta
Il progetto MedScripta nasce per sviluppare la comunicazione fra medico e malato, in
modo da creare un circuito virtuoso di conoscenza tra personale sanitario, pazienti e cittadini
(familiari, consumatori) attraverso l'uso della scrittura e della parola (Medicina Narrativa
& "Storytelling").
Le tematiche trattate sono incentrate sull'alimentazione, lo stile di vita e gli accorgimenti
finalizzati al benessere.
E' noto che alimentazione e lo stile di vita giocano un ruolo nella patogenesi di numerose malattie e rappresentano un importante strumento per la prevenzione primaria ed il mantenimento della salute psicofisica.
Il progetto si avvale delle esperienze maturate:
- dalla Biblioteca dell'Istituto Zooprolattico Sperimentale (IZS) dell'Umbria e delle Marche, negli ambiti della Scrittura Collaborativa mediata dal Computer - Computer Supported Collaborative Writing in gruppi di lavoro compositi, della Scrittura Creativa, della Editoria elettronica finalizzata alla pubblicazione di informazioni sui cibi, di iniziative di Storytellig e letture ad alta voce (KonS Project, Helsinki 2008);
- dalla Biblioteca dell'Istituto Regina Elena, IRCCS specializzato in oncologia, che ha sviluppato
una "Biblioteca del Paziente" offrendo informazione scientifica a pazienti e familiari all'interno di una rete nazionale, curando la pubblicazione di una guida per i cittadini;
- dalla Biblioteca dell'Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù (IRCCS), in collegamento con
l'Ambulatorio di Malattie Rare dell'Ente e del Portale Pediatrico con una sezione appositamente
dedicata.
Nell'ambito del progetto verrà creata una raccolta di testi e documenti multimediali
(racconti, interviste, descrizioni di effetti di alimenti e di terapie), redatti grazie all'interazione
fra pazienti, familiari e operatori sanitari.
In tale attività ai bibliotecari è assegnato il ruolo di facilitatori, fornendo letteratura scientifica e divulgativa, verificando la leggibilità delle conoscenze prodotte, sviluppando iniziative di lettura ad alta voce. I bibliotecari cureranno, inoltre, la raccolta della produzione divulgativa in forma narrativa.
Nello specifico le attività effettuate nel progetto MedScripta consentiranno di:
- formare un gruppo di scrittura collaborativa per redigere validi testi inerenti la cultura
scientifica medica ed alimentare, fruibili dagli stessi pazienti e dai cittadini;
- attivare un deposito elettronico conforme alla filosofia Open Access per la diffusione di
testi e documenti multimediali (testimonianze personali su benessere alimentare, stile
di vita, regimi terapeutici);
- permettere che le esperienze dei pazienti e dei loro familiari vengano espresse diventando
patrimonio condiviso dagli stessi ma anche materia di riflessione scientifica da
parte degli operatori.
Un punto caratterizzante delle attività previste da MedScripta è l'impiego alternativo dello
spazio di Biblioteca per le attività formative collegate al progetto e la condivisione di esperienze.
Sotto questo aspetto, il bibliotecario e la biblioteca (con gli spazi fisici e virtuali ad
essa riconducibili), costituiranno uno "snodo di interazioni sociali" di grande importanza
per la comunicazione delle conoscenze sulla salute.
